Review: Ruthless: The Musical at MC Showroom

Review by Michelle Drinnan

Fans of soap opera and musical theatre will delight in Ruthless: The Musical at the MC Showroom by Stagebugs Productions.

The show blends satire, dark humour, and unique character performances to deliver a theatrical experience like no other.

An open set delivers a clearly 60s vibe, with a live pianist creating a lovely atmosphere.  The story revolves around the talented and ambitious young Tina Denmark, whose desire to become a star leads her to shocking and ruthless lengths, with various twists and turns from her traditional housewife mother and pushy come agent.

The cast is nothing short of spectacular. Each actor brings their character to life with remarkable skill and charisma. Chloe Halley portraying the precocious Tina, is particularly noteworthy. Her ability to balance innocence with a sinister edge is captivating and truly impressive. Her embodiment of the essence of an 8 year old felt like we were well and truly watching a real life child.

Each actor created a unique and vibrant character able to build complimentary relationships with each other. The dynamic between Sylvia and Judy was especially funny. Theatre fans will enjoy the references to classic musicals in particular Gypsy, with Sylvia St.Croix unleashing her own spectacular version of Roses Turn.

The set design and costumes stood out for superb attention to detail. The creative team has done an excellent job of crafting a visually appealing and immersive environment that complements the story's tone and style. The costumes are vibrant and eye-catching, adding an extra layer of charm and authenticity to the characters.

Its important to consider the venue when staging a show, and in particular the MC showroom which is a cosy almost crowded micro-theatre. I was seated at the back of the theatre, which means I missed any floor work as well as the blocking around the edges of the stage. It was hard to engage with the performers charisma being simply unable to see them! Some moments felt rushed which lost their comedic timing, but the audience didn’t seem to notice.

One of the most impressive aspects of Ruthless: The Musical is its ability to balance humor with deeper themes. While the show is undeniably entertaining, it also offers a sharp commentary on the nature of ambition and the lengths people will go to achieve their dreams.

In conclusion, Ruthless: The Musical at the MC Showroom is a must-see for theatre lovers and anyone looking for a night of outstanding entertainment. Don't miss your chance to experience this satirical gem – it's a delightfully wicked ride that will leave you wanting more.
