Review by Emily Smith
Loosely structured around one man’s quest for a glass of water that is continually out of his reach, Moist is a cheeky showcase of acrobatic tricks, sexy synchronised dances, and increasingly creative ways to fling water over the audience.
For adults only, the show is brazenly sexual without any of the aggression that often makes such performances alienating. The performers have a self-deprecating silliness about them that makes their salacious winks and rhythmic hip thrusts endearing.
In racy outfits of light blue swimming costumes, with a rhinestoned surprise underneath, a lot of skin is on show for our viewing pleasure, and the four men seem to be having a great time showing off their athletic bodies, as well as each others’. The show is more queer dance party than traditional circus, but taken to the next level. Like, why twerk on the ground when you can twerk while doing a handstand on someone else’s head? I would if I could.
Not that there aren’t the usual phenomenal displays of strength and skill one comes to expect from a circus show. Josh looked more at home spinning in a giant hoop than on the floor, and Peter’s skills with a hula hoop had us gasping for more. The Mighty Caesar (as he is credited on The Scratch Arts website, and not without reason) had the strength and body hair of a bear (wink wink) and used it to lift and balance the entire troop. Water-seeker and swooning starlet Tim bantered with the crowd but eventually got in there and got his feet wet with the rest, maintaining a cheeky sense of humour even while balancing a boy on his thighs.
Set to a regularly changing playlist of bangers, Moist is raucous fun and guaranteed to get you wet.
