Review: Blanc De Blanc Encore at the West End Electric

Review by Regan Baker

It’s been one of those weeks in the so-called Sunshine State—rain, grey skies, and dropping temperatures have turned what should have been a sunny, spring-like paradise into a dreary, almost wintery experience. Yet, on the opening night of Blanc De Blanc Encore at the West End Electric theatre, a completely different kind of energy was brewing. While the rain trickled outside, inside, a completely different "shower" was taking place—one filled with glamour, humour, and exhilarating performance. With Moët & Chandon flowing freely, Strut & Fret popped the cork on this Champagne-infused cabaret with style, delivering a night of dazzling, decadent performances that will undoubtedly remain etched in the minds of all who witnessed it.

Debuting in Sydney in 2016, Blanc De Blanc quickly became a global sensation, with tours across London, Australia, and New Zealand. Its popularity unwavering, Blanc De Blanc Encore was launched in 2019, blending beloved acts with fresh additions to captivate a new generation of theatregoers. Whether you're experiencing it for the first time or the fourth (like me), the electrifying performances, cheeky comedy, and sultry French cabaret will leave you with a Champagne buzz for weeks.

At its core, Blanc De Blanc Encore is a visual and sensory feast—a celebration of 1920s burlesque and French cabaret aesthetic, fused with the thrill of modern circus. The production transports audiences into an exclusive, secretive world, where decadence is the rule, and opulence reigns supreme. The costumes, designed by James Browne, play a major role in this sense of indulgence and elegance, reflecting the show's opulent atmosphere while maintaining an unmistakable sense of timelessness. The intricate detail and sumptuous fabrics draw the audience into a world of high-society revelry, where the boundaries between fantasy and reality blur with every dazzling turn.

From the moment you step through the doors of the West End Electric theatre, you’re immediately immersed in the world of Blanc De Blanc Encore. The intimate setting of the venue amplifies the sensual atmosphere, as the performers glide and strut through an environment awash in golden lights, sparkling sequins, and extravagant costumes (or in some cases, a lack thereof). The minimalist set design allows the performers' talents to take centre stage, while the lighting, expertly executed by Philip Gladwell, elevates the entire experience. Gladwell’s use of sharp contrasts and carefully crafted light and shadow illuminates each performer’s every move, transforming every gesture into something deliberate, mesmerizing, and evocative. Whether they’re flying through the air, or seductively strutting across the stage, each moment is heightened, and the effect is nothing short of hypnotic.

But perhaps the most captivating element of Blanc De Blanc Encore lies in its performers. This isn’t just a circus show; it’s a masterclass in performance art. The cast, which draws from diverse backgrounds in circus, burlesque, and physical theatre, demonstrates a rare level of commitment to their craft. Each performer brings something unique to the table, whether it’s the strength and grace of an aerialist, the sensuality of a burlesque dancer, or the jaw-dropping flexibility of a contortionist. Yet what truly sets Blanc De Blanc Encore apart is the undeniable charisma and presence that each performer exudes. The show’s focus is as much on the performer’s personality as it is on their technical skill, and this creates a palpable connection between the stage and the audience, drawing us deeper into the decadent world of Blanc.

German-born Remi Martin and Canadian Felix Pouliot’s flirtatious banter infused the evening with irresistible charm, their interactions creating an electric atmosphere that held the audience captive with every word, whether sweet or sly and cheeky.

Audience engagement here is unparalleled. From aerialists pouring Champagne upside down above the audience, to Pouliot weaving through the crowd, the performers break the fourth wall in delightful, unexpected ways. This immersive approach made every moment feel personal.

Sasha-Lee Saunders’ sultry jazz vocals provided the perfect counterpoint to the more audacious elements of the show, injecting warmth and romance into the otherwise bold and flamboyant energy. Her performance was a reminder that at its core, Blanc De Blanc Encore is as much about sensuality and allure as it is about humour and spectacle.

Another performer who stood out for her incredible talent was internationally acclaimed aerialist Caitlin Marion Tomson-Moylan, whose seductive aerial and dance routines showcased not only her physical strength but also her undeniable stage presence. Every twist, every turn, every graceful ascent felt like a deliberate act of seduction, drawing the audience into her world and keeping them captivated until the final moment. Similarly, Jess Mews and Jackie Chambers added their own mesmerizing presence to the show, demonstrating their mastery of burlesque performance with an electrifying blend of sensuality and skill.

Spencer Craig, another one of the original 2019 cast members, also impressed with his charismatic masculinity, bringing a touch of seductive charm to the performance. His confidence and stage presence were magnetic, making his act impossible to look away from.

However, it was Mykhailo Makarov’s contortion routine that left the audience in stunned silence. This performance was unlike anything else seen that night, as Makarov twisted his body into surreal, almost otherworldly shapes, displaying a jaw-dropping blend of strength, flexibility, and artistry. Every movement was precise, every transition fluid, and his intense focus and controlled expression added an eerie, almost hypnotic quality to the routine. Makarov’s act was a striking reminder of the beauty and power of the human body when pushed to its limits, and it stood out as one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

Ultimately, Blanc De Blanc Encore is more than just a circus show—it’s a celebration of sensuality, skill, and artistry. With its stunning performers, breathtaking acts, playful humour, and sophisticated design, the production captures the spirit of contemporary circus and cabaret theatre at its finest. From acrobatics to burlesque, from aerial silks to contortion, each act blends beauty with danger, strength with vulnerability, and passion with precision. It’s a show that invites the audience to indulge in a decadent celebration of both physical prowess and theatrical artistry.

Whether you're a fan of circus arts, burlesque, or simply looking for a night of unforgettable entertainment, Blanc De Blanc Encore will not disappoint. It’s a show that surpasses expectations, leaving the audience awestruck, entertained, and eagerly anticipating the next performance. As the lights fade and the last notes of the show echo in the theatre, it’s clear that Blanc De Blanc Encore isn’t just a performance—it’s an experience, one that demands to be relived.
